Naming Your Multiplayer Game

Post by Pepper » Wed Apr 26, 2017 8:33 am

A good game-name can help gather a compatible group of players and avoid conflicts in public multiplayer games. We also see a lot of players in the abuse reports for game-names that could easily be avoided. So here is a place to discuss game-names, ask questions, and understand how admin thinks about what makes an acceptable game-name and what doesn't.

Mating/Dating Game-Names

One of the most common type of inappropriate game-name that we see in the abuse reports are names that suggest a "mate game." So much time and energy would be saved if players would stop trying to make WolfQuest a dating site!

Keep in mind, that game-name reports are only about the game-name and not in-game behavior or chat. So a players might not mean to invite dating/mating roleplay when they set up a game called FindYourPartner. We have had to prohibit these types of game-names––and every variation––in order to keep a lid on this sort of behavior.

Here is what we tell players when we send them a warning about this sort of game-name:

We’ve received reports that you have broken the rules of WolfQuest multiplayer games by creating a "mate” roleplay game-name. Sexually-oriented/mating/dating games or roleplay are not allowed. The word “mate” and “mating” are automatically blocked when you make a game-name. This should be a signal to you that creative spellings or substitutions of these words in game names are also unacceptable.

To clarify what this rule means, we think that most players understand the difference between *having* a mate and *mating” — but that distinction may get blurry in the process of *obtaining* a mate. That can easily turn into dating-type interactions, which can then develop into into mating-type interactions. This is what we don't want to see in multiplayer games.

So:

* It's okay to say, "will you be my mate?" and then RPing with that wolf partnership in mind.
* It's not okay to start chatting/interacting in ways that suggest physical interactions of dating/mating.

Using the words/phrases such as "mate” or "date" or “romance” or “love” or “partner” or "match” or "find the one" or similar in game-names suggests that the host wants to engage in those kinds of prohibited chats/interactions.

LGBT+ in Game-Names

Recently, players have been asking if it is OK to have LGBT or similar in game-names. It is. Players have asked why sexual orientation is OK in a game-name when sexual-oriented/mating/dating games or roleplay is not allowed. Here are some thoughts about why it is acceptable to include LGBT as a descriptor in a game-name:

Defining an Affinity Group
It is fine for games-names to identify an affinity group such as LGBT. We think of it like any other kind of affinity descriptor such as Russian (or any other language), WarriorCats, HumanHighSchool, Chill-and-Chat, LiterateRP, HuntingXP, or Loners, etc. in terms of an informative game-name description.

Identity vs. Activity
We recognize LGBT describes sexual orientation. However, it is also an identity for a group of people who often find the world a pretty hostile place. We want people to be able to play WQ without harassment, so using LGBT in a game-name can be a helpful way to set up a game that encourages players to join who are open to playing with LGBT players.

When we consider game-name reports, we think about whether they convey identity or activity. It is not acceptable to have game-names about the activity of mating/dating/romance etc. So if the game-name was something like LGBT-FindPartners or LGBT-matchmaking, then that game should absolutely be reported.

Another example of identity vs. activity is the very prevalent routine of WQ players announcing their genders when describing their wolves. Gender identification is also part of many roleplays even though gender, in most cases, is no more relevant to the gameplay than other traits. It is just a way to describe a character. For most people, gender is a very accepted part of identity and not necessarily an announcement of sexual activity.

REMEMBER: Sexual role play and chatting is never allowed so if you see that in a game, please report using the in-game reporting system.

Inclusive vs. Exclusive
Openness and inclusivity is always complicated issue and we are always considering the context and community. So, inclusive game-names like LGBT-friendly-RP would be fine. Exclusive games like LGBT-ONLY would not be OK. We prefer people make private games if they are limiting/defining gameplay or types of players narrowly–– but as long as they are open to other people joining, then players can specify the affinity group or theme. It is never acceptable to set up a game with a name that is hateful or exclusive like NO-LGBT or GaysNotAllowed.

Public vs. Private Games and Kicking
Public games are open to everyone. If you only want to play with certain players, then set up a private game. Remember, hosts should not kick players unless they are breaking a rule!

Help Build a Strong Community of Diverse Players!
All WolfQuest community members are expected to be friendly, respectful, and helpful players. Public multiplayer games are not a place to criticize or condemn people on the basis of their race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, ancestry, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, military status, or political views.

The world needs more unity and civility and we hope that WolfQuest contributes to this in some small way.

This was originally posted in The Secret Life of Admin thread but it is also very helpful here. If everyone could just understand that WolfQuest is not a dating game for humans, it would free up a huge chunk of my time.

Thank You, Players!
As you know, one of the abuse report options is for reporting questionable game-names. We really do appreciate players who report inappropriate game-names. There are amazingly few real problems with game-names, considering all the multiplayer games going on at any given time. Thank you!

What is a Mate Game-Name? I am Confused...
One of the most challenging concepts for some players to understand is that "mate" games are not allowed...The words "mate" and "mating" are blocked when making a game-name. Yet the persistence and determination of some players trying to trick the reporting system is as impressive as it is futile. So here the most important thing to know about the WolfQuest abuse reporting system:

The reports are evaluated individually by an actual person.

That's right, we review every report! Yes, really bad words are blocked when you make a game-name. But creative spellings, substitutions, or euphemisms of words or concepts are unlikely to slip by, since a human being is seeing all the reports.

If you need concrete examples of unacceptable game-names (or just want a giggle), here are 578 of examples of reported "mate game-names" from the last months. As a whole, they are a remarkable testament human persistence (and poor spelling). Perhaps someday, this communal energy will be applied instead to solving global warming!

I hope you enjoy them.

Re: Naming Your Multiplayer Game

Post by Pepper » Thu Jul 13, 2017 9:50 am

May I Kick or Report People Who Ignore My Game-Name Description?

Public Games
WolfQuest public multiplayer games are open for everyone to join. When entering multiplayer games, you agree to be a friendly, respectful, and helpful player. You should expect public games to contain all sorts of players with different interests, playing styles, and languages.

You are welcome to name your game in a way that may attract players with similar interests and styles of playing. A good game-name can go a long way to gathering a group of compatible players.

If a player joins in who is not following the roleplay or chat style, you may politely explain the goals and parameters of your game. Be nice! Simply telling a player they are "not literate" and refusing to explain what this means to you, is not helpful. You may not berate, harass or bully players into leaving.

You can say:
"This is a literate roleplay. This means we are looking for advanced players with excellent language skills like proper spelling and grammar, and complete sentences."
You shoudn't say:
"Leave! You are not literate!"

You can say:
"This is a dragon roleplay. There are lots of wolf roleplay games in the lobby. But please be a dragon in this game."
You shoudn't say:
"Dragons only! Get out or I will kick/report you!"

You can say:
"The game-name is "RussianWolves" so please speak Russian."
You shoudn't say:
"Get out! Russian only!"

If someone continues to play in a way that is disruptive to your game, you may politely ask them to leave. If they are making you and other players absolutely miserable and you have warned them several times, you may kick them. But be aware that hosts who kick excessively will hear from admin. Read more about kicking: To Kick or Not to Kick

If a player is breaking rules, you should use the in-game reporting system (and may kick them afterwards). Don't report players in public games for not following your roleplay or game-name description. Please don't report players who are merely annoying. We get reports for games in which players are clearly arguing and not having a great time but no one is breaking any rules. The reporting system is for rule-breaking.

And, of course, you can't save spots.

Private Games
Please set up a private game if you want to play with certain players or have a specific RP or playing style in mind. If you really want to be in charge and expect players to comply with your parameters, then private games are for you. If you have a particular or ongoing roleplay that isn't for a general audience (but still respects the rules), you should set up a private game.

It is not acceptable to name a public game something that implies it is only for certain players. Again, set up a private game.

You shoudn't say:
"Leave! You are not literate!"
I've seen people writing ridiculously verbose sentences to the point of being indecipherable ("The herbal liniment with iota orchre unmasculine shuffled her pied mitts above the pebbled cosmos") and saying it was "literate" and that if I couldn't read it I should leave.
To a new world of gods and monsters!

Everyone has their own way they like to roleplay and chat... and people define "literate" differently too. My point was that we are asking everyone to be polite when explaining the parameters of the game. Players too should take a minute to see if the game they join is a good fit for them and exit if it is not. You are right, no one likes to be told to leave. Public games are for everyone to join but they are not much fun if everyone is arguing, being rude, and/or telling new players to leave. When you are in the game lobby, pay attention to game-names and choose ones that sound like a good match. If you are a host, greet players as they enter and let them know what the game is about. If you are lucky enough to find a group of compatible players, set up a private game and play in peace.

Pup drowning games

Recently there have been more "pup drowning" games in the public lobby and this seems to be be causing some confusion. To clarify, There is no specific rule against drowning pups in a game as long as the host has designated this type of roleplay with a clear game-name (e.g. PupKillers, BadParents, DrownPups and similar). If you don't like the roleplay a game-name describes, then don't enter the game!

In general, don't enter games to argue with the players about their roleplay. This is disruptive and unfriendly and takes unnecessary admin time reading all those reports.

It is not acceptable, however, to enter a cooperative, pup-raising game to drown pups just to be obnoxious. Hosts should kick those players and/or send an in-game report.

Why is pup-drowning OK? We understand that players have different ways of playing WQ and we accept a range of humor and roleplay. While we would prefer that people with alternative roleplays play private games with like-minded friends, we also know there are a lot of styles of gaming in the public lobby that are not realistic (humans, dragons, cat...). And, like it or not, wolves do kill pups in wild (although those are rival pack pups.. but in the current game, this isn't an option so some players get creative).

SO, if a game-name indicates that drowning pups is the RP of the game (and that is not your kind of game) just don't join it. Do join other pup-raising games or host your own game and set the roleplay and rules yourself. We want many kinds of people to have fun playing WolfQuest. Most players do enjoy raising pups cooperatively so there should be plenty of games you would enjoy in the public lobby. Private games are also a great option.

Of course, if you are in a game and players are breaking the rules and being really inappropriate with language or extreme behavior, then please use the in-game reporting system so we can check in with them. The game reports include a portion of the chat log that allows us to see what's going on. We appreciate players helping us keep WolfQuest a pleasant community.

In the upcoming WolfQuest 3: Anniversary Edition we are working on ways for hosts to better describe their games which will help everyone find groups of compatible people.
